The Searles Valley Experience

In 1919, American Trona Corporation, now Searles Valley Minerals (SVM) introduced the Three Elephant brand name for borax indicating the strength our product provides.

SVM produces Pentahydrate Borax, Boric Acid, Sodium Carbonate (Soda Ash), Sodium Sulfate and Sodium Chloride products.

With the exception of Sodium Chloride, products are available in various package sizes and bulk.

Service and Logistics

The plant logistics team is part of the Searles Valley Minerals distribution network. Each year our expert team of order fulfillment supervisors, coordinators and material handling technicians manage and dispatch at least 30,000 orders for shipment to domestic and export customers.

The Trona Railway Company LLC is used to bring fuel and process chemicals to Searles Valley as well as delivering product to our customers. TRC transports 2,000,000 tons of freight each year with its own fleet of locomotives and railcars.

Loading and packaging facilities located at Argus, Trona and Westend select the appropriate lots for shipment. The orders vary from large bulk orders loaded into railcars to small mixed product orders of packaged goods picked up by customer trucks or delivered by Searles Valley Minerals.

“Let our advance worrying become advance thinking and planning."

      – WINSTON CHURCHILL

Ready to start

Worrying solves nothing, of course, but we take the words of Churchill in terms of recognizing potential kinks in the supply chain before they occur. As a logistics professional it’s important to run “what if” scenarios and dig into any areas that give you pause for thought. That’s where you’ll find those advance worries turn into advance planning!

Sodium Carbonate

Over a million tons of this plain white powder leave Searles Valley by truck, rail and ocean-going freighter each year for destinations all over the world.

Soda Ash lowers the temperature at which sand melts when making glass. Glass that uses soda ash are flat glass (windows, automotive, mirrors) and container glass (food and beverage bottles, tumblers and serving dishes). Soda ash is also used in detergents, directly as a water softener in dry mix, and as a raw material for other detergent chemicals. Soda Ash is used for neutralization (lead-acid battery recycling, environmental acid controls) and in aluminum manufacturing.

In addition to being a fundamental ingredient in glass manufacturing, soda ash is necessary to petroleum refining, water treatment and pulp and paper production. Soda ash is one of the ten highest volume minerals produced in North America and constitutes nearly 25% of every pound of glass manufactured.

Pentahydrate Borax

V-BOR® is a more concentrated form of sodium borate because it contains less bound water (5 molecules). It is found in detergents, and personal care products. It is used to make glass, ceramics, and insulation. It is a flux in metal recovery, wire drawing and refractories. It is also a corrosion inhibitor in automotive antifreeze, and a preservative in casein-based adhesives. It is also used to neutralize skins/hides in leather tanning, corrects boron deficiency in plants, reduces melting temperature in glass process, is a fire retardant in cellulose insulation, and is used to make a bleaching agent for home laundry.

Boric Acid

Boric acid is used to make textile fiberglass for tire cord, to reinforce certain plastics and tapes, and for home curtains. It is also a fire retardant in cellulose insulation, a raw material for sodium borohydride (a paper bleaching agent), and a raw material for boron fibers used for high-strength composites. It is also an environmentally friendly preservative for wood, a pesticide, and a corrosion inhibitor.

Anhydrous Sodium Sulfate

Naturally occurring anhydrous sodium sulfate is found in abundance in the Searles Valley. We manufacture a standard grade product, for various end uses. Anhydrous sodium sulfate can be used in many detergents where it is a processing and water conditioning agent, a detergent builder, and provides alkalinity control. It is also a refining agent for container glass, used to decompose wood to make paper and cardboard, and is a component in dry powder carpet fresheners. It is also used as a setting agent in textile dyeing.

Sodium Chloride

Produced through solar evaporation, our salt is used as a softener for water treatment, to treat roads for snow and ice and as a main ingredient in deicers. Other uses include: as a disinfecting agent in salt pools and as an ingredient in the manufacture of many industrial compounds.
